SITE:

This project featured the conservation and maintenance of the Chateau de la Petite Malmaison located in imperial Paris. Built by Josephine and Napoleon Bonaparte and containing original furnishings, the chateau is steeped in the artistic and literary worlds which the imperial couple inspired.

PROJECT:

Carried out during the summers of 1995-1997, the major focus of the program was the stabilization and restoration of the west and north facades along with their bas relief decorations. Other projects included the recreation of decorative finishes (faux-marble and faux-bronze).

HISTORY:

The chateau was built for Josephine Bonaparte in 1803-1807 as part of a large greenhouse (removed in 1826 due to poor maintenance) on the park grounds of the imperial residence, La Malmaison. The raison d'être of the building and greenhouse was to serve as Josephine's floral retreat from her duties as empress of France. A native of Martinique, she cultivated exotic plants and her famed roses here.

This project is no longer taking place.
